01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Waiting for freshly brewed coffee begins with a quiet pleasure: choosing your own cup and saucer from the colorful collection lined up behind the counter to suit your mood that day. Situated in a residential pocket of Kirigaoka, Kita Ward, Café Macallan offers just such simple pleasures in an easygoing, gentle atmosphere. A piano and various musical instruments sit within the room against a backdrop of pleasant tunes, inviting guests to linger inside or, on mild days, settle outside on the terrace.

The coffee selection ranges from the signature Macallan Blend to specialty origins like Indonesia Gayo Mountain and Tanzania Honey, alongside binchotan charcoal-roasted beans. Daily tasting coffees and coffee sets come served with sweet confections, offering a crisp, clean cup with restrained bitterness to sip at leisure. Tea sets poured from a pot and freshly squeezed fruit juices provide plenty of alternatives for those steering clear of caffeine.

House-made chiffon cakes are the natural accompaniment to tea or coffee. Beyond classic flavors, options include a plum chiffon cake that balances refreshing sweetness with subtle acidity, pumpkin, and rotating seasonal varieties, each appreciated for its moist, airy texture. Paired in a set with coffee or tea, they make a light afternoon treat suited for reading or taking a break.

For a more substantial meal, consider pasta made with springy fresh noodles—such as tomato sauce or Japanese-style mushroom—alongside thin-crust original pizzas and ciabatta sandwiches baked to order. Unique cafe bites like tacos and the "Taco☆Sauce," made with locally certified Tokiwa sauce from Tokyo, add distinctive character to the savory lineup.

The drinks menu also extends well into spirits, led by the namesake Macallan 12 Year Old and single malts such as Bowmore and Yamazaki, as well as sake and shochu. Payments are cash only, so be sure to have coins and banknotes on hand before you drop by.
